Leadership Workshop

I partnered with the Big Self School, a team of leadership and organizational development consultants, to design a self-paced introductory course on developing your leadership style. Due to the proprietary nature, I cannot share content here, but I have included the basic structure and content of the workshop.

  • The first part of this course focuses on learning more about different leadership styles, including servant leadership, transformational leadership, authoritative leadership, participative leadership, and identity leadership. Learners are prompted to reflect on possible benefits and challenges of each style, and where they might be most impactful.

  • The second part of this course begins with a brief introduction of character strengths as described by VIA Institute on Character. We then transition into self-reflection exercises and prompts to identify your strengths and how they have positively contributed to your successes (personal and professional). It ends with an assignment to consciously apply your top strength in one new way each week.

  • The final section of this course focuses on past, present, and future experiences. Learners reflect and journal on types of leaders they have worked with, and how those impacted them and/or their team. They then evaluate their current skills and values, ask for feedback from others, and work through a series of questions to determine what style they currently identify most with. The course finishes with goal-setting for the future, identifying the type of leader they’d like to be and the legacy they’d like to leave behind, and short-term steps to make progress towards that goal.

From Burnout to Wellness: Using Appreciative Inquiry to Shift MidMichigan Health towards a Strength-Based Perspective

Our group partnered with MidMichigan Health (MMH), a division of the University of Michigan Health system that serves nearly 1 million people, to address issues of provider burnout within the organization. We created a long-term intervention focused on the science of physician well-being, employee engagement, appreciative inquiry, and goal-setting. As the COVID-19 pandemic began during this period, we also created a short-term intervention that was shared across the MMH System.
